2012 James returns to NYC to take 1st assistant...
This is a shot from my former life as an assistant in NYC.  I’m going back to the big apple at the behest of photographer, Henry Leutwyler who has offered me first assistant position. Wow, what an opportunity.  It will be a huge adjustment after having been herding goats in Maine for 2 years and shooting (however infrequently) on my own.   I’m excited to get back in the fast-lane...

James to be included on Maine Home & Design Mag.s...
James Allen Walker lives on Dutton Hill with his wife, children, a herd of goats and a flock of chickens. James and Beth moved back to Maine from New York City before the birth of their first child. James is pleased to be making images for Maine publications—working locally jives with his developing sense of sustainability. Walker’s most recent exhibition, called “About Face,”...

Faces of Maine
My work with Maine Magazine has been an inspiration for a show.  I’ve been derelict in keeping my blog updated with current work and information.  My appologies.  I’m currently the master of Maine Magazine’s “Faces Maine” facebook campaign.  Do me a favor visit facesmaine and like it.  I’ll get brownie points.  I’ve also created a fan page for my...

New Horizons
Some new opportunities have been coming my way recently. I’ve been working with a magazine that I’ve wanted to contact for sometime.  Maine Magazine and Maine Home and Design assigned me to the Tug Narragansett during Portland’s MS Harborfest on August 21st. From there I was invited by Hartley Marine Services to accompany the Narragansett crew on a run from Rockland to Boston. We left just...

Seth Grinder; Remember this Portrait?
I was looking through archives for a client and came across this old shot of my buddy, Seth, AKA “the bike nerd”.  I get the sense he’s much happier now.

Roy Patterson, stone sculptor.
I’ve been working with the distinguished, Roy Patterson for some time photographing his work.  He may be mentioned in Maine Home and Design Magazine and needs a headshot.  Yay… I’ve been hoping to have a redo on past less-than-wonderful attempts at a great portrait of Roy.  Well, this lighting thing didn’t just fall on my head one day.

UPDATE:  Alexey was chosen to be on The McGraw-Hill Companies Young Artist Showcase. A repeat customer; I met Alexey when he was at Julliard and I did his portrait then.  He paid me the ultimate compliment by his repeat business years later.  A fantastic musician. I recommend seeking out his work if you appreciate refined, perfectly performed classic and contemporary music. ...

Fresno, California
After Monday’s stressful string of delayed flights traversing the country, and resting only a couple hours, I hit the ground running this morning.  I’m covering an organization called Hope Now for Youth.  This story took me to several locations. One; the warehouse of Trail-Gear owned by Matt Messer.  They make really big toys!

Hopkinsville, Kentucky
Two little dudes, Malik and Sam, show off their dribbling skills. I met the two among other wonderful kids on my trip to the hoods of Hopkinsville, Kentucky.  I was there to cover the Challenge House project started by former Hopkinsville mayor, Wally Bryan (below).  Challenge House is a movement involving relatively affluent families purposing to make a difference in a less affluent community...

Jude, one of my favorite NYC pals.  If it weren’t for his couch and coffee maker… I tell you what, boy.  I shot this portrait of him the last time I took advantage of his hospitality.  What a handsome fella’.  And ladies, I do believe he’s available.

Kimberly at the Woman's Bowery
As a photographer shooting for a magazine its frustrating sometimes when your vision of a great photograph doesn’t align with the judgement of the photo editor.  I think this is just a sweet portrait and would have loved to see it printed.  Oh, well.

Veronica Kelly at Woman's Bowery Mission
Mrs. Kelly, the lovely spouse of our fair city’s police chief and supporter of the Woman’s Bowery Mission, kindly made herself available to me for a portrait in the Garden of the Manhattan based woman’s shelter that she helped make possible.   Thank you, Mrs. Kelly.  What a pleasure meeting you.

The Bike Nerd Cometh
Seth Werkheiser is a friend from our NYC days who quit his cushy job as an editor at AOL music, just got on his bike, and started riding.  After a year he made it up to Maine to visit.  Check out his blog: www.thebikenerd.com

Back in NYC
World Magazine has sent me an a couple assignments as of late.  This one was just down to NYC.  Only a 6 hour drive.  Thanks to Mr. Josh Harper for coming with and assisting me on this one.  Thanks to Henry Leutwyler as well for letting me come and give him a hand in the studio for Essence Magazine.  It was refreshing to be on the scene again at MILK studio.

Bedbugs in Wichita
Economy, ever the priority when traveling on a tight budget, there are just somethings not worth compromising.  One thing is bugs.  I’d prefer to sleep in a rental car than to snuggle into a mattress infested with parasitic creepy-crawlies waiting to come out and suck my blood while I sleep. Fortunately, my partner took no convincing and bedbugs aren’t that difficult to spot....

Novelist and writer of stories, Bret Lott
Charleston, S.C. Bret Lott shares with me the concept of artistic legacy.  By that I refer to the desire of an artist- in my case, a writer in Mr Lott’s- to make connection with someone more advanced in our chosen field who’s level of greatness we aspire to.  Someone we hope in some way to make our creative ancestor.  I have wondered if this concept was a dead one.  Alfred Steiglitz...

Next Roadtrip:
I’ve got butterflies about the trip I’m embarking on tomorrow. Whatever I remember to bring is all I’ll have.  And the more I can do without the less I have to carry!  This time I’m driving my new (‘99) VW Passat wagon.  I’ve driven it to NYC and D.C. the last two trips. So, I think its trust worthy.  Changing the oil today.  Wrapping up some things around the...

Chris & Angel
Finding 2 locations in one; a student lounge at King’s College in the Empire State Building.  A chalkboard for Angel and a concrete wall and ottoman for Chris.  2 Shots for one story.  They work as a pair but with some color contrast in there to preserve the individual framing.  This shoot worked out well and I’m eager to see how they print.

I’m not sure how many people who view this blog are also subscribers to World Magazine, but I thought this photo was a good example of how what I do doesn’t stop with me. Sometimes, the photograph is the least interesting thing about the story.  And some other times the design work saves or improves the photograph. This shot like many I do for World was pressed for time.  It’s...

Mr Brooks
Arthur C. Brooks is the president of AEI. I was pressing my luck with this shot.  The composition cuts into Mr Brooks forehead.  He’s leaning right into it, too.  The noir lighting gives him mystery and the perspective lines in those book shelves really propel the figure forward.  Still, with other shots to choose from the editors picked this one.  I’m always thankful when they see...

Pastor Tim Keller of Redeemer Presbyterian
I drove through the night to get to NYC in time for my 20 minute appointment with Manhattan’s busiest pastor. With 20 minutes total, there was no time to fumble with lighting.  This shot was done on the sidewalk on 35th street, I think.

Michael Card plays in Manchester, Maine.
For my first northeaster up in Maine this winter, I drove an hour north to catch up with Michael Card.  He played in a little meeting house in Manchester built in 1793 that still has the pews with the little doors on them.  I felt terrible making Michael sit for my session after his concert.  He played a lovely set including some Christmas pieces remarkably after having been stuck in a...

James shoot's for Yellow Tail
My past work for Johnnie Walker and Jose Cuervo got me a shoot for Yellow Tail Wine through their PR firm, Catalyst.  These glasses were designed by Michael Graves Design Group for Yellow Tail. This is not the final image, but just a mock up of the final. A discriminating eye will notice some hanky-panky.
